New BMW i8 Spyder Spy PhotosEuroMpire
The BMW i8 Spyder has been seen in its camouflage attire for the first time.
The new Spyder is due to be on sale in 2018, which means we will most likely see it arrive and early 2019 model. The arrival of the new Spyder will shadow that of the currently updated BMW i8 coupe that the company plans to introduce later this year.
The new BMW i8 coupe can be seen in some of the spy shots we have obtained, and clearly reveals the various changes between both body styles. The sloping rear windshield which was standard on the original i8 has been changed to a smaller vertical rear window. Some other changes include engine cover modifications, which are flanked with new cowl vents that flow seamlessly into the individual rear wing spoilers.
This i8 Spyder and the currently updated i8 coupe will maintain its current 1.5 Liter, turbo inline 3cyl, 6spd Automatic with electric motor combination. Notably, the petrol and electric motor inspired combination boasts a low 361 horsepower and 420 ft/lb torque, but is expected to be modified for better performance. Plans may also be in the works to increase the Battery capacity which will help boost the i8 beyond its current 12 to 15 mile range. (Hybrid performance enthusiasts in this price bracket should definitely give the Acura NSX a view, with its 570+ horsepower and 468 pound-feet of torque.)
With all of these exterior and engine modifications, we should expect some changes in additional technologies to the interior. Some hints were dropped by BMW of the options available with its i8 i Future Interaction Concept which was displayed at last year’s consumer electronics show. That concept technology on display featured user gesture controls and multiple digital displays.
We look forward to the release of the new BMW i8, and look forward to running it through its paces in the near future.
